Happy Feet......Fitting Tips

Listen to your Foot Emotions

Treat your feet with respect and they will return the favor.

Happy Feet
These impressive foot facts will encourage you to select your next pair of shoes wisely: About one quarter of all the bones in your body (an incredible 52!) are found in your feet; in a lifetime, the average person will walk the equivalent of four times around the globe; and when you are walking, the pressure on your feet often exceeds that of your body weight. So be good to your feet; select proper fitting footwear.

The right socks

The right sock can make or break the perfect shoe fit. When trying on shoes, make sure you are wearing socks which are appropriate for the shoes. For instance, if you are trying on boots that you would wear with heavy socks, don't try them on with thin nylons.

The right time

There's nothing more disappointing than buying a shoe you thought was perfect, then suffering from its tight fit all day, or all night long. To avoid a tight fit, try on shoes at the end of the day when your feet are most swollen. Trying on footwear at the end of the day will ensure you've chosen footwear that will accommodate your foot at your widest. Now go ahead and dance the night away!

The right foot

No one is perfect. In fact most people (about 60%) have one foot that is larger than the other. Different sized feet can make shoe fitting a challenge. For most people, their larger foot is the one opposite from the hand they write with. Because the shoe must comfortably fit your larger foot, try the shoe on your larger foot first. And don't be shy, go ahead and request your feet to be measured for the most accurate fit. Then step on out!

The first step

Make your first step of the day as comfortable as your last. When trying on shoes, be sure to stand up and enjoy a walk around the store to evaluate their comfort. Then put the shoe to the "wiggle test"- a proper fitting shoe should allow you to wiggle your toes. For most footwear, your toes will be able to touch the top of the shoe, but there should be 3/8" to 1/2" of space between your longest toe and the end of the shoe.

The right shoe

What mistake most often made when buying shoes? You probably guessed it, buying shoes that are too tight. We remind you that buying shoes that are even a bit too tight is a mistake. We understand the temptation, but shoes don't usually stretch- so if they are too small today, they will probably be too small tomorrow too. It's true that soft leather and suede give slightly, moulding to your foot, but they will not dramatically increase in width or length. And remember, due to a variety of reasons, your shoe size changes slightly throughout your life- so just because you've "always" worn a size 38, doesn't mean you still do.
